What is reflexology?

Originating from Ancient Egyptian and Chinese principles, reflexology is a holistic therapy that promotes balance and harmony within the body to enable it to heal itself.

Reflexology is based on the principle that there are energy zones that run throughout the body and reflex points on the feet and hands that correspond to all the glands, organs and parts of the body. When we are ill or stressed, energy can become blocked. Stimulation of the reflex areas on the hands and feet cannot only help to clear these blockages and rebalance the organs, glands and body's systems, but also improve blood supply.

It is a very safe and natural therapy, that is incredibly relaxing.

How can reflexology help?

Reflexology can be successful in:
  • reducing stress/tension
  • improving circulation
  • promoting deep relaxation
  • improving sleep
  • treating mood-related disorders
  • balancing the whole body.
This in turn can have a beneficial effect for overall wellbeing.

Whilst reflexology may benefit your health, it cannot diagnose or cure health conditions. As with all complementary therapies, it should not be used as a substitute to prescribed medication or instead of seeking professional medical advice.

Reflexology is suitable for all ages.

What to expect?

At your first treatment, I will carry out a detailed consultation to find out a bit more about your health, diet, lifestyle and reasons for trying reflexology. This will include finding out about any medication you are taking and any recent operations and/or illnesses.
The treatment starts with a gentle cleanse of the feet followed by some general massage techniques to warm up the feet and start to relax you. I will then use specific techniques, using the fingers and thumbs, to apply pressure and stimulate the different reflex areas. The pressure used is firm but not painful (nor ticklish) and is adapted for each and every client. Some reflexes may feel more sensitive where there is an imbalance or blockage in the body. I will manipulate these reflexes to try and remove the blockages.
You will remain fully clothed throughout the treatment. You will be seated in a reclining chair and covered with blankets and towels to keep you warm whilst you relax.

A full reflexology treatment lasts an hour. Please allow an additional 15 minutes for your first treatment, to allow time to carry out the consultation.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Reflexology will affect each individual differently. As it rebalances the body, it can stimulate strong, but generally positive, short-term responses. I will talk to you after the treatment about what I felt.

It is important to drink plenty of water after each treatment to help flush out any toxins that have been released. You should also avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine, strenuous activity and a heavy meal immediately after the treatment - whilst your body is rebalancing.

At the end of the treatment I will provide you with a leaflet containing aftercare advice and may recommend further treatments to ad wellbeing.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will depend on your specific needs. Initially, weekly treatments may be advisable whilst the body is rebalancing itself. Thereafter, fortnightly or monthly treatments may be recommended.
